This article is written on the experiences of Roslyn and Jarome Arnull of Auckland.
We searched for our dream pad and when we found it, or something as close as we could get, we excitedly bought it and move in.
We bought this property because, at this time, this was ideal and all we ever wanted.
It had 2 bedrooms so one could act as a guest room, a private back garden and a garage.
It was some way to the shops, but we could drive.
Fast forward 2 years.
We were expecting our first child and the second bedroom was too far from ours, plus the next-door neighbours had a pooch which incessantly barks. We could put up with it because we were at work all day, but not when the baby was born.
So, the need to uproot and start looking again was imperative.
We settled on a nice 3br in a rural setting where peace and quiet reign away from the melodious tones of the neighbour’s dog!
Fast forward 2 years.
Our second child was on the way, and Jarome’s mother was making noises she would like to come and live with us as her health was not good. This means a 2yr old and a new baby will be sharing a room! While mother has the 3rd bedroom.
I had also known the local kindergarten was 6 km away and driving there with a new-born and a now near 3 yr old would take all my willpower to remain sane.
Plus, visits to the hospital for Jarome’s mother would be a real mission as it was a 50-minute drive each way.
Fast forward 6 months
We now realise insufficient thought for future needs went into the choice and location of the previous 2 property, and we had let our hearts rule our heads instead of using logic. We are now having to move again with all the added expenses once more of carriers, solicitors, packers etc,
This time, though, we take care focusing on the size, location, and proximity to all the facilities we will need in the years to come.
Fast forward another 6 months.
We have moved into our new 4-bedroom home with a charming conservatory which serves as mothers private lounge.
She is well and a real blessing helping us with the children. She has joined many clubs and made friends.
How much easier it would have been if we had looked further ahead and given more thought when we bought our first 2-bedroom unit. Not only would we have, at that time, bought the present property for much less, we would have paid nearly 5 years off our mortgage!
Oh! How well we all wish we were blessed with the foresight or hindsight.
